A swing set is a beam with swings; a playset adds a deck, a slide and a climb. The deck is what changes the safety job: guardrails, fall height, 9 inches of surfacing, a bigger use zone and a longer build. Two of each, compared.

What a deck adds

A slide, a climbing route (ladder, rock wall, rope), a covered space, and a place for kids to be off the ground: the reasons a 7-year-old prefers the Skyfort II to the Ranger Plus. It also adds a second use zone (the deck and slide exit need 6 ft of surfacing, separate from the swing arc), a taller structure to anchor, and a build measured in days rather than hours (Gorilla prints 6-8 hours for a mid-size set, 16-20 for its largest; Lifetime's tower is 10-12; Swing-N-Slide's Ranger is one 90 lb box). The tower sets are ranked on best backyard playsets.

What a deck costs in safety work

CPSC's handbook, on platforms: guardrails or barriers on any platform over 30 in; a guardrail at least 25 in high on platforms 30-48 in; a barrier at least 27 in high with openings under 3.5 in on platforms 48-72 in; 33 in over 72 in. On surfacing: 9 in of loose fill for equipment up to 8 ft (12 in as filled), 6 in minimum under equipment under 4 ft, and rubber tiles only with an ASTM F1292 report for the fall height. On entrapment: openings under 3.5 in or over 9 in, checked on the built set. On slides: never exiting in front of a swing, faced north if possible. A swing-only set has to satisfy the swing rules (8 in between swings and from the supports, 8 in above the surfacing, twice the beam height front and back) and nothing about platforms. The surfacing picks are on best playground mulch and surfacing; the layout on swing set safety zone.

Choose a swing set if / choose a playset if

  • Choose a swing set for kids under 5, a yard under about 25 x 25 ft, a one-day build, or a budget that stops before 9 in of mulch across a bigger zone. Rankings: best swing sets for small yards.
  • Choose a playset for kids 5-11, a yard that takes the deck zone plus the swing arc, and a willingness to do the guardrail and surfacing work the handbook describes.
  • Either way, anchor it and surface it. Lifetime and Backyard Discovery include stakes; Swing-N-Slide and Gorilla sell them (best swing set anchors).

Questions parents ask

What is the difference between a swing set and a playset?
A swing set is a beam with swings, sometimes a small slide; a playset (or play structure) adds an elevated deck with a slide, climbing routes and often a clubhouse. The deck brings CPSC's platform, surfacing and entrapment rules into play.
Is a playset worth it?
For kids 5-11 with a yard that fits the use zone, usually; see are backyard playsets worth it.
How much mulch does a playset need?
CPSC: at least 9 in of loose fill for equipment up to 8 ft high, extended 6 ft beyond the equipment and twice the beam height in the swing direction.
Can I add a deck to a swing set later?
Gorilla and Swing-N-Slide sell hardware-only kits for building or extending sets with your own lumber; a bolt-on tower for an existing A-frame is maker-specific. Check the maker before drilling.
