Wooden vs Metal Swing Sets: Which Is Safer, and Which Lasts?

Cedar sets publish bigger structures and longer warranties; steel sets need no sealing and often ship their anchors. CPSC has rules for both materials. Here is what each maker prints, with two cedar and three steel picks.

What CPSC says about each material

The handbook has a rule for each. Metal "should be painted, galvanized, or otherwise treated to prevent rust, corrosion and deterioration," never with lead paint, and bare metal platforms and slides belong out of direct sun. Wood "should be naturally rot-resistant and insect-resistant (e.g., cedar or redwood) or treated to prevent such deterioration," never creosote; and since the end of 2003, CCA (arsenic) pressure-treated wood is no longer processed for residential use, with the note that the replacement treatments corrode some hardware faster, so use the fasteners the maker specifies. Every cedar set here is sold as 100% cedar; every steel set here says galvanized or powder-coated. Capped bolts and closed hooks apply to both.

Where wood wins

Published structure and warranty. Gorilla prints 4x4 posts, a 4x6 beam and an 800 lb total; Swing-N-Slide prints a 3 in beam, a 300 lb beam capacity and set limits; Gorilla's lumber warranty is 10 years and Backyard Discovery's whole-set warranty is 5. Cedar sets also carry the taller decks and the wider range of add-ons (Gorilla and Swing-N-Slide sell hardware-only kits to extend a set). The cost is upkeep: Backyard Discovery notes a sealant may be required, and the handbook's wood rule assumes the treatment is maintained.

Where metal wins

Anchoring and maintenance. Backyard Discovery's metal sets ship with pre-drilled leg holes so the stakes bolt through without drilling; Trekassy includes ground anchors with its frames; Lifetime's steel-and-HDPE Adventure Tower includes an anchor kit. None needs staining. Trekassy is also the only maker on the site to say adults may use the set (440 lb). The costs: steel gets hot, Sportspower's per-user limit is 100 lb, Trekassy's chains are bare zinc and it names no standard, and only Backyard Discovery prints F1148 on a steel set. Steel gauge is printed by nobody except Trekassy (2 in tube; wall not stated).

Choose wood if / choose metal if

  • Choose cedar for a printed load rating, a tall deck, a long warranty and the option to add beams and features later. Budget a weekend a year for sealing.
  • Choose steel or steel-and-HDPE for no maintenance, anchors in the box, and (Trekassy) an adult rating. Site it out of full sun.
  • Either way, buy on chains, anchors, rating and standard, not on the material. Rankings: best swing sets and best heavy-duty swing sets.

Questions parents ask

Are wooden swing sets safer than metal?
Not by material. CPSC has rules for both (rot-resistant or treated wood; galvanized or painted metal). The safety differences are chains, anchors, ratings and standards, which vary by maker.
How long do wooden swing sets last?
Gorilla warrants its lumber for 10 years and Backyard Discovery its sets for 5; both assume the cedar is sealed as their instructions say. No maker prints a service life.
Do metal swing sets rust?
CPSC's handbook requires metal to be painted, galvanized or otherwise treated against rust; the steel sets here are galvanized and/or powder-coated. Scratches through the coating are the maintenance item.
Which holds more weight?
Gorilla's cedar 4x4 sets print 800 lb total; Trekassy's steel frames print 440 lb; Lifetime's steel-and-HDPE tower prints 1,600 lb total. See swing set weight limit.
