Swing Set Weight Limits: How Much a Swing Set Holds, Brand by Brand

Four units, one question

Per seat or per station is the load one swing and its hanger are rated for (Lifetime: 135 lb per seat). Per child is the maker's cap on any one user (KidKraft: 110 lb; Sportspower: 100 lb). Per beam is the load the swing beam and its posts carry across all stations at once (Swing-N-Slide: 300 lb). Per set is the structural total, sometimes with an occupant count (Swing-N-Slide Ranger Plus: 595 lb, six occupants; Gorilla: 800 lb; Lifetime tower: 1,600 lb or 10 kids). A set limit is not a per-seat limit: three kids at 100 lb on a 300 lb beam is at the beam's number even if the set's number is higher. CPSC's handbook does not set numbers; it tells you to follow the maker's instructions and to use lightweight swings, which is the seat side of the same question.

Adults on a kids' swing set

Trekassy is the only maker here that says adults can use its frame, at 440 lb. Every other set prints an age range that stops at 8, 10, 11 or 12, and the per-seat and per-child figures (100-135 lb) are child-sized. An 800 lb Gorilla total does not make a 200 lb parent's swing a rated use; it makes the structure strong enough that the seat, chain and hanger are the parts that fail first. If adults will swing, buy adult-rated hangers (250 lb) and a frame that says so; the options are on best heavy-duty swing sets.

The hardware that sets the real limit

The hanger and chain are usually the weakest rated parts. Gorilla's SNS XD and Swing-N-Slide's heavy-duty hangers are cast steel with bronze bushings rated 250 lb each and mount with two bolts through the beam; a stock eye-bolt or S-hook carries no printed rating on any set we read. CPSC's handbook wants S-hooks closed to less than a dime's thickness and bolts not protruding past the nut by more than their diameter. Mistakes to avoid

• Dividing a set total by the number of swings. The beam and hanger figures are separate and usually lower.
• Reading a kid count as a load rating. "Up to 15 kids" describes play areas, not pounds.
• Letting an adult push off a 135 lb seat. The seat and hanger, not the frame, are the limit.
• Skipping the hangers when upgrading. A 250 lb hanger on a 4x6 beam is the cheapest capacity you can buy.
