What CPSC says about anchoring

The Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook: "Play equipment may need to be restrained with anchors to keep it from tipping over while in use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for anchoring. Be sure anchors are buried or otherwise covered with protective surfacing. Exposed anchors, hooks, bolts, etc. can create tripping hazards or lead to other injuries." It also wants a level site, because a level set is less likely to tip and its surfacing less likely to wash away. Backyard Discovery's own guide adds the reason parents feel: an unanchored set has a far greater risk of toppling or breaking in severe weather. The anchor rubric (how we rate): holding design 30%, fit range 20%, material and corrosion resistance 20%, instructions 15%, warranty 15%. PlayStar wins by a distance because it prints what the others do not: auger diameter (2-5/8 in), total length (15 in), depth in ground (12-14 in), and hot-dipped galvanized hardware for both the posts and the slides. Swing-N-Slide and Gorilla describe their kits without a dimension. No kit here prints a warranty term, so all score a 4 on that metric.

Augers for wood, stakes for metal

A wooden set is anchored by screwing an auger into the ground beside a post or ground rail and lagging the auger's top plate to the wood; PlayStar's kit includes the lag screws and washers for that, plus bolts for slides and climbers. Backyard Discovery's published method is the same idea with its included stakes: twist the stake into solid soil beside the ground board, drill the rail if it is not pre-drilled, and bolt through with the supplied bolt, lock washer and barrel nut. A metal set is anchored through its legs: Backyard Discovery pre-drills the leg bottoms so the stake bolts through the foot, and a U-stake like Skywalker's goes over a round leg tube up to 2 in. Owners of a Backyard Discovery, Lifetime tower or Trekassy set already have anchors in the box; add a kit only if the manual's pattern leaves a post unanchored.
