Read before you buy

CPSC's Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook sets the frame for every swing set on this page: a level site at least 6 ft from any structure, protective surfacing under and 6 ft beyond the equipment, anchors per the manufacturer's instructions, closed hooks, capped bolts, and swings spaced 8 in apart and 8 in above the surfacing. The three pages to read first are swing set weight limits, how to anchor a swing set and the swing set safety zone, because the set that fits the yard with its use zone is the only set worth ranking.

How we scored these

Every set is scored on the swing set and playset rubric on how we rate: fall and pinch design 30% (chain coating, guardrails, rounded edges, ladder design), anchoring provision 20%, rated capacity and structure 20%, certification 15% (ASTM F1148 named or not), install reality 15% (published assembly time, parts availability, warranty). The scores come from each maker's product page and, where the maker publishes it, the manual. We have not assembled or loaded these sets. Play features (how many slides, whether there is a telescope) are not scored: they are why kids want a set, not why it stays upright.

Anchoring: the box or the checkout

The handbook says play equipment "may need to be restrained with anchors to keep it from tipping over while in use" and to follow the maker's instructions. Backyard Discovery states that ground stakes are included with all of its swing sets, with anchoring instructions, and its Durango goes further with an auger on every leg; that is why its sets score 9 or 10 on anchoring. Gorilla Playsets sells ground stakes in pairs and recommends replacing them annually; Swing-N-Slide sells its Anchor-It kit separately. Neither is a reason not to buy, but the kit belongs in the same order. The kits are ranked on best swing set anchors.

Weight ratings: who prints them

Swing-N-Slide prints a total limit, a swing-beam capacity and a maximum occupant count on every set (Ranger: 345 lb, 300 lb, 3; Ranger Plus: 595 lb, 300 lb, 6). Gorilla prints an 800 lb total on its 4x4 sets with ages 3-11. KidKraft prints 110 lb per child for up to 9 kids. Backyard Discovery prints a kid count ("up to 15 kids" on the Skyfort II) but no pounds. That is the order the capacity metric follows, and it is the order in which you can answer the question every parent asks. The table is on swing set weight limit.

Chains, edges and hardware

Plastisol- or rubber-coated chains (Gorilla, Swing-N-Slide, KidKraft's Horizon Lookout) and rope chains (Backyard Discovery's Buckley Hill and Durango) both remove the pinch that bare chain gives small fingers, and coated chains stay cooler. Gorilla's recessed bolts address the handbook's protrusion rule (a bolt should not stick out past the nut by more than its own diameter). Flat-step ladders (Gorilla, Backyard Discovery) are easier for a 3-year-old than a rock wall that doubles as the ladder (Tanglewood). None of the makers publishes head-entrapment spacing, which the handbook sets at under 3.5 in or over 9 in; check it on the built set. Hardware upgrades are on best swing set safety accessories.

Who should skip all of these

Yards that cannot give the set its 6 ft use zone and twice the beam height in front of and behind the swings; see swing set safety zone. Families who want a tower with several slides rather than a swing beam, who should read best backyard playsets. Anyone who wants steel instead of cedar, on wooden vs metal swing sets. And anyone who wants a printed adult rating, on best heavy-duty swing sets.

What to look for on any swing set listing

  • Anchors in the box. Backyard Discovery: yes. Gorilla and Swing-N-Slide: buy the kit.
  • A weight rating in pounds, per beam or per set, not just a kid count.
  • ASTM F1148 named. Backyard Discovery prints F1148-22; Swing-N-Slide prints ASTM and CPSIA; Gorilla and KidKraft do not name it on their pages.
  • Coated chains and recessed or capped bolts.
  • Beam and post size. Gorilla prints 4x4 posts and a 4x6 beam; Swing-N-Slide a 3 in beam; the others do not print it.
  • Assembly time and box weight. From 90 lb in one box (Ranger) to 1,181 lb (Wilderness Gym). Gorilla prints hours; Backyard Discovery uses the BILT app.
  • Footprint plus 6 ft. The set plus its use zone, on level ground.

What is the safest swing set for kids?
On published design: coated or rope chains, a flat-step ladder, guardrails on the deck, anchors in the box and ASTM F1148 named. Backyard Discovery's Buckley Hill has all five for young kids; Gorilla's Chateau adds an 800 lb rating and recessed bolts for older ones.
How much weight can a swing set hold?
