Best Backyard Playsets (2026): Ranked by Deck, Anchor and Weight Rating

Read before you buy

A playset is a swing set with an elevated deck, and the deck is what CPSC's Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook spends most of its pages on: guardrails over 30 in, barriers over 48 in, openings under 3.5 in or over 9 in so a head cannot be trapped, 9 in of loose-fill surfacing under equipment up to 8 ft, a 6 ft use zone, and anchors per the maker's instructions. How we scored these

The swing set and playset rubric on how we rate: fall and pinch design 30%, anchoring provision 20%, rated capacity and structure 20%, certification 15%, install reality 15%, scored from each maker's product page and, where published, manual. Lifetime's Adventure Tower Deluxe leads because it is the only playset here that prints both a per-seat and a total rating, includes an anchor kit and describes capped edges; its specs come from the SwingSetMall retailer listing because Lifetime's own page loads them by script, and we say so on the card. We have not built any of these.

The deck: height, rails and openings

Gorilla prints deck heights (4 ft on the 3x3 sets, 5 ft on the Chateau); Lifetime prints 5 ft; Backyard Discovery and KidKraft print overall dimensions only. The handbook's rule scales with height: platforms 30-48 in need a guardrail at least 25 in high, platforms 48-72 in need a protective barrier at least 27 in high with openings under 3.5 in, and slide platforms over 200 sq in need a rail on every side except the slide and the access. None of the makers prints rail height or opening size, so this is checked on the built set with a tape measure: any gap between 3.5 and 9 in is the one to close. Lifetime's "hard edges rounded or covered with plastic caps" and Gorilla's recessed bolts are the two design statements on this page that address the handbook's protrusion rules directly.

Anchoring: who ships it

Backyard Discovery: ground stakes with every set, and a published method. Lifetime Adventure Tower Deluxe: anchor kit included. Gorilla: stakes sold in pairs. KidKraft: not described on the page. The handbook's line is that equipment "may need to be restrained with anchors to keep it from tipping over while in use" and that anchors should be buried or covered by surfacing so they are not a trip hazard. Capacity: who prints it

Lifetime: 1,600 lb or 10 kids, 135 lb per seat. Gorilla 4x4 sets: 800 lb total. KidKraft: 110 lb per child, up to 9. Backyard Discovery: a kid count (Skyfort II "up to 15 kids"). Those are four different units, and only the per-seat and per-child ones tell you anything about one child on one swing. A parent of a 100 lb 11-year-old has an answer from Lifetime, Gorilla and KidKraft and none from Backyard Discovery's page.

Who should skip all of these

What to look for on any playset listing

• Deck height printed, so you know which handbook rail rule applies and how deep the surfacing must be.
• A rating in pounds: per seat (Lifetime), per child (KidKraft) or per set (Gorilla, Lifetime).
• Anchors in the box (Backyard Discovery, Lifetime tower) or a maker's kit (Gorilla).
• ASTM F1148 named (Backyard Discovery) or at least a safety-standard statement (Lifetime).
• Edge and hardware language: rounded or capped edges, recessed bolts, coated chains.
• Assembly hours and shipping weight: 4-6 hours (Lifetime Monkey Bar) to 16-20 (Gorilla Wilderness Gym); 145 lb to 1,181 lb.
• The footprint plus 6 ft on every side, on level ground, with the slide exit clear of the swings.
