The arithmetic
CPSC's handbook asks for 6 ft of play area around each piece of equipment, 6 ft from any structure, and, for to-fro swings, a distance in front and behind equal to twice the height of the top bar. So a set with a 15.5 ft wide tower-and-beam footprint needs roughly 27.5 ft of width, and the swing bay needs about 2x the beam height (16-20 ft on most sets) in each direction. The playset rubric (how we rate), unchanged; footprint decides what is on the page, not the score. Backyard Discovery leads because stakes and F1148-22 are worth 35% of the rubric and it ships both on every set. When the swings are what will not fit
The swing arc is the largest single demand on a small yard: twice the beam height, front and back, with surfacing. If it does not fit, a deck-and-slide playhouse like the Sweetwater Heights needs only the 6 ft zone around the structure and under the slide exit. The handbook still wants surfacing under any elevated deck; ground-level equipment with no elevated play surface (a sandbox, a playhouse on the ground) is the only category it exempts. Who should skip all of these
Yards under about 18 x 20 ft cannot give even the playhouse its zone. Yards that are long and narrow may take a swing-only A-frame across the width where a tower will not; see best swing sets for small yards.
