What walls do for a deck

CPSC's handbook wants a guardrail on any platform over 30 in and a full barrier over 48 in, with openings under 3.5 in. A clubhouse wall is a barrier by construction, which is the safety argument for it: a walled deck is harder to fall from than a railed one. The handbook's entrapment rule still applies to every window, doorway and gap between the wall and the roof: openings must be under 3.5 in or over 9 in. Buckley Hill's mesh panels and vertical pickets are one way to do that; a solid wall with cut-out windows is another; what to avoid is a decorative railing with 5 in gaps. Surfacing underneath follows the deck height, not the walls: 9 in of loose fill for equipment up to 8 ft.

How we scored these

The playset rubric (how we rate). Playhouse features (roof, windows, kitchen, chalkboard) are not scored; the deck they sit on is. The Sweetwater Heights is here as the answer for a yard that cannot take a swing arc, and it scores low on capacity and certification because Backyard Discovery prints neither on that page, which we would rather say than hide.

Windows, visibility and heat

The trade a walled clubhouse makes is sightlines: a parent on the patio cannot see a child inside it, and the handbook's advice to supervise assumes you can. Mesh panels (Buckley Hill), open pickets and large windows keep the view. Heat is the other cost: a roofed cedar box in July is warm, and a composite or steel one (Atlas) warmer; the handbook's note about keeping bare metal out of direct sun is written for slides but the logic is the same. None of the makers prints window sizes, so the 3.5 in rule is a tape-measure check on the built set.

Ground-level playhouses

A playhouse on the ground with no elevated play surface is the one category the handbook exempts from protective surfacing. Backyard Discovery sells several (its catalog lists Timberlake, Aspen, Scenic Heights and others); we have not scored them at launch because our rubric is built for equipment with a fall height, and a ground-level house has none. If the yard is too small even for the Sweetwater Heights, that is the category to shop, and the only rule that carries over is the 6 ft from structures and the entrapment spacing on the windows.

Who should skip all of these

Parents who want to see the child at all times from the house; an open-deck set from best backyard playsets keeps the sightline. Small yards should start at best playsets for small backyards. And anyone deciding between cedar and steel for the clubhouse itself: vinyl vs wood playsets.
