What paid assembly covers

Gorilla offers in-house assembly by zip code and says the assembly company calls within 5 days of the order; its service includes a 30-day workmanship warranty. Backyard Discovery offers assembly as a separate service scheduled on a different day than delivery, with a contractor process it describes on the product page. KidKraft offers professional assembly by region, requires the build site to be level and free of obstructions before the crew arrives, and hauls off the packaging when done. In all three cases the crew builds the set the maker shipped; anchoring with the included stakes is normally part of assembly, and ground augers from a third-party kit are not.

What it does not cover

Grading. KidKraft's condition is explicit: your site must be level or the installation is delayed. Cut-and-fill is on swing set on a slope. Surfacing. CPSC's 9 in of loose fill across the use zone is a separate delivery and a separate afternoon; see best playground mulch and surfacing. The use zone. Nobody but you checks that the set sits 6 ft from the fence and twice the beam height from the patio; that is swing set safety zone. Sealing. Backyard Discovery notes a sealant may be required and is not included; that is the first weekend after the build. Extra anchors for sets that ship none (Gorilla, KidKraft, Swing-N-Slide): best swing set anchors.

DIY or pro

DIY if the set is under about 8 printed hours, two adults are available, and the site is already level: the Lifetime Monkey Bar Adventure (4-6 hours), a Gorilla Outing or Nantucket, a Swing-N-Slide Ranger. Pay for it if the set is 700 lb-plus with a two-day estimate (Skyfort II, Wilderness Gym, Lifetime tower), if the manual's anchoring pattern is beyond your tools, or if the deck is 5 ft and you want the rails checked by someone who has built twenty. Either way the handbook's assembly rule is yours to verify: every bolt tight with a lock washer or locking nut, bolt ends capped, S-hooks closed to less than a dime's thickness, no tubing open at the ends.

Mistakes to avoid

• Booking assembly before the site is level. KidKraft will reschedule; Backyard Discovery schedules a different day than delivery.
• Assuming the crew lays the mulch. Order it for after the build.
• Building alone. Every maker's estimate assumes two people; a 4x6 beam is a two-person lift.
• Skipping the post-build check of hooks, bolt caps and rail gaps, which CPSC puts on the owner.
