From the Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook: use the bolts and screws the maker provides or recommends, corrosion-resistant; tighten every fastener with lock washers, self-locking nuts or another locking means; cover exposed bolt ends with caps, with no bolt protruding past its nut by more than its own diameter; cap or plug the open ends of tubing so they cannot be removed without tools; and "Close S hooks and all hooks so that the gaps are less than the thickness of a dime." Open-ended hooks are allowed only at the uppermost attachment of a swinging element. Handholds should be about 1 to 1.5 in in diameter so a child can grasp them. How we scored these

The accessories rubric (how we rate): safety design 30%, fit range 20%, material 20%, certification 15%, install 15%. Swing-N-Slide leads on both hangers and handles because it prints a load rating and names ASTM and CPSIA on the part; Gorilla's identical-looking XD hanger prints the rating but not the standard. The plastic handle set and the KidWise hangers print neither a rating nor a standard and score accordingly.

Hangers: bushings, bolts and the rating

A stock swing hangs from an S-hook through an eye-bolt: the hook wears the eye, the eye wears the hook, and the handbook's dime rule is about the gap that opens as they do. A cast-steel hanger with a bronze bushing (Swing-N-Slide, Gorilla XD) puts the wear in a replaceable bushing and mounts with two bolts through the beam instead of one eye-bolt; both print 250 lb. That number is per hanger, on a kids' beam (Swing-N-Slide prints ages 2-10 on the part); it does not make an adult a rated user, which is the point made on swing set weight limit. Fit: a two-bolt hanger needs beam depth for the through-bolts; Gorilla sells a separate wood hanger for 4x4 beams. Handles: where and how long

The handbook wants a handhold at the top of a ladder or where a child transitions to a platform. Short handles (Swing-N-Slide 8.5 in HDPE, rated 115 lb; Gorilla's plastic set) go at the top of a ladder or the edge of a deck. Long handles (Gorilla 21 in metal, KidWise 44.7 in) run alongside a ladder or rock wall so the grip is continuous. KidKraft builds side handles into its rock walls; on other sets they are an add-on. Metal handles get hot in sun, the handbook's bare-metal caution; HDPE does not, and Swing-N-Slide's is the only handle here with a weight limit printed.

Who should skip all of these

Owners of a new Gorilla, Swing-N-Slide or Lifetime set, which ship with coated chains, rated hangers or capped edges already; check the hooks against the dime rule and leave the rest.
