Bucket, harness or both

There are three restraint designs in this category and they suit different children. A full bucket holds a child by geometry: high back, deep sides, legs through two holes, nothing to fasten. It is the design for a child who cannot yet sit unsupported, and it is the one that works when the adult pushing is distracted. A bucket with a harness or T-bar adds a strap or a bar across the front, which extends the useful age upward and adds a thing that can be left undone. A convertible seat, which is what Little Tikes sells, starts as the second and becomes an open high-back seat when the T-bar drops to the bottom.

Published age ranges tell you what each maker intends: Swing-N-Slide states 8 months to 3 years, Step2 states 9 to 36 months, Gorilla Playsets states 3 to 5 years for its full bucket, and Little Tikes states 9 months to 4 years. Those are the ranges to buy against rather than the child's height. And every one of them assumes one child per seat, which is worth saying because the two-seat Step2 rocket is the exception that puts 100 lb on a single hanger.

What their hands touch

A toddler grips the chain. That makes the coating a safety specification rather than a nicety: bare zinc chain pinches fingers between links under load and gets hot enough in direct sun to be unpleasant on small palms. Swing-N-Slide coats all 50 in of its chain in plastisol and states that the coating prevents pinched fingers and will not rust. Gorilla coats the bottom 36 in of 61 in and leaves the top 2 ft bare so the seat height can be adjusted, which is a reasonable trade if you hang it long and a problem if you hang it short. Step2 and Little Tikes ship rope or nothing at all.

Rope is quieter and softer than chain and it is the part that fails first: UV and abrasion take rope strength long before a galvanized chain shows rust. If a seat comes on rope and the swing lives outdoors year round, expect to replace the rope or move the seat to coated chain. CPSC's handbook is also specific about the hook at the top: open S-hooks should be closed to less than the thickness of a dime, which is the check most second-hand sets fail.

Swing-N-Slide wins on the combination that no other seat here has: a full bucket, coated chain the whole length, quick clips, and both ASTM and CPSIA stated. Gorilla is second because the hangers are in the box and the chain length is adjustable. The Step2 rocket is last on the rubric and still the right answer for twins, which is what pick labels are for.

Three checks before you hang one

The hanger, not the seat. A toddler seat weighs little, but the load path runs through the hanger and the beam. If your set still has the stock S-hook and eye bolt, that is the weak point, and rated cast-steel hangers with bushings cost a fraction of the seat (best swing set safety accessories). Clearance underneath and around. CPSC wants a seat hung so a child's feet clear the ground at rest with room to swing, and the use zone runs twice the beam height in front of and behind the swing, over protective surfacing (swing set safety zone). Hanging a toddler seat lower than the belt swing it replaced does not change that zone.

Spacing from the next swing. What to look for in a toddler swing seat

A published age range and weight limit. Every seat here has both; plenty of listings have neither. Coated chain, or rope you are prepared to replace. Coated for pinch and heat, the full length if you can get it. A high back. It is what keeps a child who falls asleep in the seat in the seat. Drain holes. A molded bucket that holds rainwater grows algae and stays slippery. UV-stable plastic, stated. Gorilla states built-in UV protection so the seat will not heat up or fade; a cheap bucket goes chalky and brittle in two summers. What is in the box. Chain and hangers, rope and hardware, or nothing at all: three of these five ship a way to hang them and two do not.

When to change the seat

When the child can climb into it unaided and out of it at will, which is usually somewhere between 3 and 4, the bucket stops being a restraint and starts being an obstacle.
