What changes when the kids are bigger
Load, height and use. A 10-year-old on a belt swing pumps harder than a 5-year-old, which is why Gorilla's printed 800 lb total on 4x4 posts and a 4x6 beam matters more here than anywhere else on the site, and why the hangers (250 lb cast steel on Gorilla and Swing-N-Slide) are worth checking. Decks get taller: Gorilla's Chateau is 5 ft, which under CPSC's handbook means a barrier at least 27 in high with openings under 3.5 in, not just a guardrail, and 9 in of loose fill underneath. And older kids climb the outside of things; the handbook's entrapment rule (openings under 3.5 in or over 9 in) applies to the rungs and rails they use as a route up.
How we scored these
The swing set rubric (how we rate): fall and pinch 30%, anchoring 20%, capacity 20%, certification 15%, install 15%. Gorilla's 4x4 sets score identically (7.6) because they share a structure; the order among them is arbitrary and the choice is the feature set. Lifetime's Adventure Tower Deluxe (1,600 lb) is not on this page because Lifetime prints ages 3-10 for it; it leads best backyard playsets instead.
The age ranges makers print
Gorilla: ages 3-11 next to 800 lb. KidKraft: ages 3-10 and 110 lb per child. Swing-N-Slide: ages 2-10. Lifetime: 3-10 (Adventure Tower) and 3-12 (Monkey Bar Adventure). Sportspower: 3-8. Backyard Discovery prints a kid count rather than an age. For a 12-year-old, only Lifetime's Monkey Bar Adventure prints an age that covers them, and its per-seat limit is 135 lb. The per-child numbers are on swing set weight limit; the adult question is on best heavy-duty swing sets.
Features that survive a 10-year-old
Tube slides (Mountaineer, Skyfort III, KidKraft's Treetop) and tire swings on their own beam (Frontier, Pioneer Peak) keep older kids interested; a rope ladder and rock wall with rope are the climbing routes they use. What a 10-year-old does not need is a sandbox under the deck or a toddler bucket swing. The handbook wants tire swings capable of 360-degree rotation in a separate bay away from other equipment, which is exactly why Gorilla puts them on a separate beam. The monkey-bar sets specifically are on best swing sets with monkey bars.
Who should skip all of these
Families with a 4-year-old and a 10-year-old should buy for the 4-year-old's deck height and add features later; see best swing sets.
