The fall from the bars and what goes under it

CPSC's handbook answers both: maintain at least 9 in of loose-fill surfacing (wood mulch, engineered wood fiber or shredded rubber) for equipment up to 8 ft high, starting from a 12 in fill that compacts to 9, extend it 6 ft beyond the equipment, and never install it over concrete or asphalt. None of the makers here prints the height of its monkey bars, so plan for the 8 ft rule. Rung material and spacing

Gorilla prints "heavy-duty metal rungs" on the Navigator; Lifetime's frame is powder-coated steel throughout; the cedar sets from Backyard Discovery and KidKraft use their own rung designs without printing the material. Metal rungs get hot; the handbook's advice to keep bare metal out of direct sun applies to bars as much as slides. Rung spacing and the gaps between bars and the deck are the head-entrapment question: openings should be under 3.5 in or over 9 in, and no maker on this page prints its spacing, so measure the built set.

What age for monkey bars

The makers' own ranges: Lifetime 3-12, Gorilla 3-11, KidKraft 3-10. A 3-year-old cannot cross monkey bars; the range describes the set, and the bars are the last feature on it a child grows into. The handbook asks for guardrails on platforms over 30 in and barriers over 48 in, which is the deck the bars usually start from.
