What each brand prints

Backyard Discovery, on every swing set page: "engineered to meet or exceed ASTM standards (code F1148-22); for residential use only," a kid count ("up to 15 kids" on the Skyfort II), 100% cedar, dimensions, box weights, and a 5-year warranty; on its anchoring guide, "ground stakes are included with all Backyard Discovery swing sets." KidKraft, on every set: "for up to 9 kids, ages 3-10 with a maximum weight of 110 lb per child," dimensions, "premium wood" with a UV- and mold-protected stain, and a note that ASTM standards limit its sets to residential use; nothing on anchoring, no F1148 code, no warranty term on the page. CPSC's handbook wants the maker's anchoring instructions followed; one brand publishes them on the web, the other leaves them to the box.

Wood, chains and slides

Backyard Discovery names cedar; KidKraft says premium wood, rot- and insect-resistant, which meets CPSC's rule without naming the species. Chains: Backyard Discovery uses rope chains on its starter sets (Buckley Hill, Durango) and belt swings on the rest; KidKraft's Horizon Lookout names plastic-coated chains to minimize pinching and heat. Slides: Backyard Discovery prints lengths (6, 8, 10 ft) and offers tube slides; KidKraft's Flagstaff Fort prints a high-rail slide with a sloped edge. Ladders: both offer flat-step ladders; KidKraft's slotted rock wall ladder and Knox Peak side handles are its climbing answer. Hardware upgrades for either are on best swing set safety accessories.

Choose KidKraft if / choose Backyard Discovery if

  • Choose Backyard Discovery for F1148-22 named, stakes and instructions in the box, cedar named, a 5-year warranty and, on the Skyfort II, the most features per set.
  • Choose KidKraft for the 110 lb per-child figure, coated chains on the Horizon Lookout, high-rail slides and factory stain. Confirm anchoring in the manual.
