Why buy a rectangle
A rectangle's springs pull straight across, so the bounce is even along the length of the mat instead of funneling to the center the way a round does. That is why competition trampolines are rectangles and why families with a gymnast or a cheerleader look for one. On the spec sheet it shows up as longer springs (ACON 10 in, AlleyOOP 9.25 in, against 5.5-7 in on rounds), higher published limits (ACON 330 lb, AlleyOOP 280 lb) and taller frames (ACON 43 in, AlleyOOP 40 in). Springfree's square is the springless answer: rounded corners give it 155 sq ft of mat in a 13 ft box, more jumping area than its footprint suggests, with the rods under the mat. How we scored these
Enclosure 30%, anchoring 20%, capacity 20%, certification 15%, install 15%, from each maker's page (how we rate). ACON wins because it is the only rectangle that ships anchors and a ladder, prints its frame gauge and certifies a limit; AlleyOOP's lifetime frame warranty carries its install score; Skywalker's 250 lb limit is the lowest of the rectangles. The TDU in-ground kit is here for buyers who want a rectangle flush with the lawn; it scores low because the net is optional and no limit is published, which we would rather say than hide.
Fitting a rectangle in the yard
A 17 x 10 ft ACON or AlleyOOP needs a flat rectangle of roughly 23 x 16 ft once you add the 3-5 ft of clearance makers ask for; Springfree specifies 23 x 23 ft for its square. Frame heights of 40-43 in mean a ladder is near-mandatory, which brings CPSC's warning that a ladder gives small children unsupervised access; take it off between sessions. The ground must be level: a rectangle's long frame shows a slope that a round hides. Who should skip all of these
Young kids doing ordinary jumping do not need a rectangle; the family rounds on best trampolines for kids put the net inside the springs for less money and less lawn. Anyone without a level 20-plus ft strip should not force it. And if the buyer is a teenager learning flips, read the somersault line in CPSC's guidance first: landing on the head or neck can cause paralysis, on any shape.
