What in-ground changes, and what it does not

Sinking the trampoline removes two things: the 3-ft drop to the ground and the ladder CPSC warns about. It does not remove the springs, the frame edge, the collision risk with a second jumper or the somersault risk, and it adds one hazard of its own: the edge of the pit. The makers know it; TDU pre-drills its top frame for a net and says plainly that if a trampoline does not have a vented pad it is not meant to be in the ground, and BERG will not sell its Champion in-ground without the enclosure. CPSC's guidance (one jumper, no somersaults, pads over every spring, enclosures help prevent falls) applies exactly as it does above ground. How we scored these

Same rubric (how we rate), applied to what the maker publishes. In-ground kits score well on anchoring, because a frame inside a retaining wall is not going anywhere, and poorly on capacity and certification, because none of the four prints a single-jumper limit or a standard on its listing (TDU's 600 lb is structural). The ordering rewards a complete kit: TDU's Classic ships the wall, pad, mat, frame and springs and prints the frame gauge; BERG ships the net.

The pit, the wall and the drainage

The kit is the smaller half of the job. A 14 ft round needs a pit roughly the frame's diameter and deep enough that the mat sits at lawn level, a retaining wall to stop the sides collapsing (TDU includes a patented wall with a lifetime warranty; BERG's dealer page does not mention one), a way for rain to leave the hole, and airflow under the mat so the bounce is not damped, which is what the vented pads are for. Most buyers hire the dig. The realistic budget lines, and why the trampoline is not the expensive part, are on in-ground trampoline cost and installation.

Who should skip all of these

Renters, anyone on a lot with a high water table or bedrock, and anyone who wanted an in-ground trampoline because they thought it removed the need for a net. If the goal was a lower step-on height for small children, remember CPSC's rule that no child under 6 should use a full-size trampoline at all (age recommendations). If the goal was wind resistance, a properly anchored above-ground frame from best trampolines with a kit from best trampoline anchors gets most of the way there for a fraction of the excavation.

Questions parents ask

Are in-ground trampolines safer?
They remove the fall to the ground and the ladder. They do not change the on-mat injuries (collisions, flips) that make up most of the hospital data, and the pit edge is a new hazard. CPSC still recommends an enclosure.
Do in-ground trampolines need a net?
The makers here think so: TDU pre-drills for one and BERG will not sell the Champion without one. Only BERG includes it in the price.
How much does an in-ground trampoline cost to install?
We do not print prices, and the trampoline is the smaller cost anyway; excavation, wall and drainage are the larger. See in-ground trampoline cost.
Can you put a regular trampoline in the ground?
TDU's position is that a trampoline without a vented pad is not meant to be in the ground, because a sealed pad over a pit traps air and damps the bounce. In-ground kits also use frames without tall legs.
