What CPSC says about slides

The Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook has three slide rules that decide the buy. Placement: "a slide should not exit in front of a swing," and the slide exit needs the same 6 ft of protective surfacing as the rest of the set. Height: guardrails or barriers are needed around any platform over 30 in; platforms above 48 in need a barrier at least 27 in high with openings under 3.5 in, and slide platforms over 200 sq in need a guardrail or barrier on all sides except the slide and the access. Heat: "Locate bare metal platforms and slides out of direct sunlight," and "A slide that faces north will receive the least direct sunlight." Every slide on this page is plastic, which helps but does not make a south-facing tube slide cool in July.

How we scored these

The swing set rubric (how we rate): fall and pinch design 30%, anchoring 20%, capacity 20%, certification 15%, install 15%. For a slide set the fall-and-pinch metric is doing the work: deck height, guardrail design, ladder type, chain coating. Slide length is not a score; a 10 ft wave slide is not safer than a 6 ft one, it just needs a taller deck, which needs more guardrail and deeper surfacing. The order follows the overall score, which is why the low-deck Buckley Hill leads.

Deck height and the surfacing under the exit

Gorilla prints its deck heights (4 ft on the Outing and Nantucket II, 5 ft on the Chateau; Lifetime's Adventure Tower is 5 ft); Backyard Discovery prints overall dimensions (Skyfort II 148 in tall) and slide lengths (6, 8, 10 ft) but not deck height. The handbook's surfacing rule keys on equipment height: 9 in of loose fill for equipment up to 8 ft, 6 in minimum under equipment under 4 ft, and never over concrete. A 5 ft deck with a 10 ft slide means 9 in of mulch across the whole use zone including the exit. The materials and depths are on best playground mulch and surfacing.

Rails, sides and heat

KidKraft describes its wave slides as high-rail with a sloped edge for gentler landings; Backyard Discovery's Sweetwater Heights slide is high-rail too. Enclosed tube slides (Skyfort III, Mountaineer) remove the fall-off-the-side risk and add two things: a hot interior in sun and a blind spot for a parent. Orientation is a site decision the listing cannot make for you; face the slide north where the yard allows, per the handbook, and keep the exit out of the swing arc. Who should skip all of these

Families whose yard cannot hold the deck's use zone plus the swing arc; a swing-only set from best swing sets for small yards or a playhouse-and-slide from best playsets with a playhouse fits where these will not.
