The four questions before you order

  1. How old is the youngest child? CPSC: no child under 6 on a full-size trampoline. A swing set is the gift for a 3-5 year old; the makers print 2-10 or 3-10 on their starter sets.
  2. Does the yard have the space? A 12 ft trampoline needs about a 20 ft circle with the maker's clearance; a swing set needs its footprint plus 6 ft all round and twice the beam height in the swing direction, on level ground. Ask, or look at a photo. See what size trampoline and swing set safety zone.
  3. Will it be anchored? Buy a product that ships the anchors (Zupapa, Jumpzylla, Backyard Discovery) or put the kit in the same order. An unanchored gift is the one that blows into the fence.
  4. Who assembles it? A 12 ft trampoline is an afternoon for two adults (Jumpzylla prints 60-90 minutes); a swing set is 4-8 hours or a paid install. A gift that sits in boxes until March is not a gift.

Trampoline or swing set

Under 6: swing set, and only a swing set. Six to nine: either, and the swing set gets more years from a family with younger siblings coming. Ten and up: the trampoline, sized for the printed per-jumper limit they will grow into (trampoline weight limit). The AAP's position, which we quote in full on are trampolines safe for kids, is that home trampolines are strongly discouraged; a gifter should know that the parents may decline, and should ask before a 12 ft box arrives. A swing set carries no equivalent statement, only CPSC's handbook on siting, anchoring and surfacing, which the parent has to do after the box is opened.

Questions parents ask

Is a trampoline a good gift for a 5 year old?
No: CPSC says no child under 6 should use a full-size trampoline. A starter swing set like the Buckley Hill (ages the makers print as 3-plus) is the gift for that age.
What is the best first trampoline?
