The headroom math

An indoor trampoline needs three heights to add up: the frame, the child, and the jump. A typical US ceiling is 8 ft. A 3 ft Little Tikes frame stands 33.5 in tall, so a 40 in child on it has a head at roughly 6 ft and about two feet of air before contact. Skywalker's 48 in mini stands 4.7 ft to the top of the net, which eats more of the room but is what stops a child stepping out sideways. The 60 in mini is taller again. Neither of those numbers is a problem in a basement with 8 ft of clearance and both are a problem under a 7 ft ceiling with a light fitting in the middle. Measure to the lowest thing above the frame, not to the ceiling.

CPSC's trampoline guidance is written for outdoor frames, but two of its rules transfer indoors intact: one person at a time, and clearance overhead as well as around. Handrail or sewn-in net

Indoor kids' trampolines come in two shapes. The 3 ft handrail bouncer gives a child something to hold and nothing to stop them stepping off the side; the fall is about a foot onto a floor you choose. The 4 to 5 ft mini with an enclosure gives a wall of mesh sewn directly to the mat, no springs at all (stretch bands instead), and a padded handlebar inside the net. The second design is strictly safer and takes noticeably more room; the first folds into a closet.

What neither design has is springs, which is the quiet advantage of the whole category: no spring gap means no pinch point, and stretch bands wear differently from steel coils. Outdoors, the equivalent design argument is on springless versus spring trampolines.

How we scored these

The trampoline rubric (how we rate), applied as written: enclosure and edge design 30%, anchoring 20%, rated capacity 20%, certification 15%, install reality 15%. That is harsh on the 3 ft bouncers and deliberately so. They score 3 on enclosure because a handrail is not an enclosure, and they score low on anchoring because an indoor frame has nothing to anchor to. Nothing here is scored for fun, color or LEDs. The floor under it, and the two house rules

Indoors the surface is yours to choose, and hard floor under a bouncer is the one decision that turns a one-foot fall into an injury. A rug is not surfacing; interlocking foam or a rubber mat is. The two rules that make the difference indoors are the same two that matter outdoors. One child on the mat at a time, because these frames are rated for one and because a 55 lb limit is one small person. What to look for on an indoor kids' trampoline

A published per-user limit. All five here have one; plenty of listings do not, and a trampoline with no published limit cannot be matched to a child. Bands rather than springs. Standard at this size and worth insisting on: no coils means no pinch. Handrail height above the mat, not above the floor. Little Tikes publishes 26.25 in above the jumping surface, which is the number that tells you whether your child can actually reach it. Whether it folds, and what folds. Why fitness rebounders are not on this page

The 40 to 50 in rebounders sold for adult exercise look like the answer and are not: the mats are tuned for an adult's weight, the handlebars are set for an adult's reach, and the ones rated for hundreds of pounds achieve that with a stiffer mat that gives a child almost nothing back. They also have no enclosure. If an adult in the house wants a rebounder, buy a rebounder; it is not a child's trampoline with a bigger number on the box.
