Backyard Playsets Comparison

Step2 vs Little Tikes: Which Toddler Play Equipment Should You Buy?

Both brands mould the same tough plastic for the same age group, and then publish different things. Step2 ships ground anchors and totals; Little Tikes prints the fall height its slides need. That decides more than the colour does.

Slide against slide

Figures as published by each maker (or the named retailer); each value links to its source. "Not published" means the figure isn't in our cited sources.

The closest like-for-like pair in the two ranges, as published by each maker. Note the difference in the last row: Little Tikes prints the fall height its slide needs, and Step2 does not.

What each brand actually makes

The brands overlap less than their reputations suggest. Step2 competes at the structure end: moulded gym sets with a platform, swings and a slide, climbers with two slides, and the Naturally Playful line that adds a glider and a rope ladder on a 6 ft slide. Those are sets you anchor into the lawn and keep for several years.

Little Tikes competes at the single-item end: a first slide a toddler can climb at eighteen months, an indoor-outdoor version of the same slide, and small cottages. Those are items you can carry, store in a garage over winter and pass on. Both brands mould double-wall plastic with colours moulded in rather than painted, both are weather resistant, and both state US manufacture with US and imported parts on several lines.

In practice the decision is usually about the stage, not the brand. At eighteen months to three years the Little Tikes slide is the right size and the right height. From three the Step2 sets give a toddler somewhere to go, and from five or six either brand is being outgrown and a cedar or steel set is the next purchase (best playsets for toddlers, best outdoor toddler slides).

The limits both brands print

This is the row that surprises most buyers: the numbers are small and they are published clearly. Step2 states 60 lb per user and 60 lb per swing on the Play Up Gym Set with a 240 lb total and a limit of four children, and 60 lb per child with a 180 lb total and a limit of three on the Double Slide Climber. The Naturally Playful Adventure Lodge goes to 75 lb per user and 300 lb total.

Little Tikes prints 60 lb and a maximum of one child on the slide, which is the stricter rule of the two and the easier one to break at a birthday party. Sixty pounds is around the weight of an average seven-year-old, so both brands are telling you the same thing: this equipment is for the under-sixes, and the limit is a structural statement rather than a suggestion (swing set weight limits).

Anchors, fall height and what goes underneath

Step2 includes ground anchors and assembly hardware with the Play Up Gym Set and the Adventure Lodge, and specifies that the anchors are driven flush with or below ground level, which also removes a trip hazard. That is a real safety provision and it is why those two sets score 9 on our anchoring metric. The Double Slide Climber and the Scout and Slide Climber publish no anchoring method, which is normal for a free-standing climber but worth knowing before a windy weekend.

Little Tikes answers a different question and answers it better than almost anyone in this category: both slides state that safety surfacing or mulch is required that meets or exceeds a critical fall height of 2 ft. That is the CPSC way of thinking about play equipment, where the ground under the structure does the injury-prevention work, and almost no toddler-slide listing says it out loud. Take it literally: grass is not protective surfacing, and a slide on a patio is the wrong install (best playground mulch and surfacing, what to put under a trampoline for the same argument on the other side of the yard).

Choose Step2 if / choose Little Tikes if

Choose Step2 if you want a first swing set rather than a first slide, if a published total and a per-swing figure matter to you, if you want ground anchors in the box, or if you have two or three children who will use it at once.

Choose Little Tikes if the child is under three, if the equipment has to come indoors in winter or move between houses, if you want something a single adult can assemble without tools, or if you want a playhouse rather than a climbing structure (best backyard playhouses).

And if the child is nearly out of the 60 lb bracket, buy neither: a cedar or steel set with a published per-seat rating is the purchase that lasts (best playsets for 3 year olds, best swing sets for toddlers).

How we picked

Why these picks made the list

Every pick is scored from the maker's published specs, manual and warranty terms on a safety rubric we publish (net and edge design, anchoring, rated capacity, standards, install reality), and the sources behind each number are listed at the bottom of the page.

Scores are our editorial judgment of that published information. Nobody pays for placement, and an unpublished spec is never guessed upward. See every rubric and weight.
